Biomass and Methane Production in Double Cereal Cropping Systems with Different Winter Cereal and Maize Plant Densities

The biogas supply chain requires a correct combination of crops to maximize the methane yield per hectare. Field trials were carried out in North Italy over three growing seasons, according factorial four cropping systems (maize as sole-crop or after hybrid barley, triticale and wheat) two maize plant densities (standard, 7.5 plants m−2 high, 10 m−2) with harvested whole-crop silage. specific production ton was measured through biochemical potential (BMP) method, while hectare calculated on basis BMP results considering biomass yield. average wheat resulted be equal 4550 Nm3 ha−1, +17% +28% higher than respectively, A delay sowing reduced this crop; grown 20%, 33% 47% lower, cultivated single crop. high population increased (+23%) barley (+20%), compared standard density. highest (32 t ha−1 DM) (9971 ha−1) within obtained for followed by at This system 46% 18%, smaller amount available solar radiation, resulting from later maize, advantage related application
